When upgrades stop mattering

When upgrades stop mattering

July 28, 2026 · Lukas Berger

There's a quiet moment in a lot of mobile strategy games where upgrades stop feeling meaningful. You tap the button, a number goes up, and nothing about how you play changes. That's usually when we start drifting away.

Good games avoid this by tying upgrades to decisions. A new tower that counters a specific enemy, a skill that opens a new tactic, a route that changes your whole plan. Those keep the brain engaged.

The worst offenders just scale numbers forever. Progress becomes maintenance, and maintenance isn't fun. We've dropped otherwise decent games for exactly this reason.

When you're trying a new strategy game, ask yourself after an hour: has the way I play actually changed? If the answer is no, the honeymoon may be shorter than you'd like.
